DIGITAL DRAMATURGY PROJECT: PHASE ONE

As an Emerging Dramaturg, finding places to foster connections with Emerging Playwrights and also practice dramaturgy is difficult in today's dramaturgical landscape.  The Digital Development Project is a new, process-based initiative with the goal of connecting emerging playwrights with emerging dramaturgs to collaborate on new play development.
LEARN MORE ABOUT DDP
As part of the inaugural phase of DDP, I have had a space to work with playwrights and actually practice dramaturgy! In the fall of 2023, I worked with three playwrights on the development of their plays, all at different stages in their careers and plays at different stages of development. This initiative is playwright-focused, meaning I tailored each playwright's dramaturgical consultations to what their goals and needs were. One play resulted in a staged reading and finalized draft for performance, one in a more whole draft to submit to new play festivals and incubators, and one finally knew what questions she needed to ask to continue writing her draft. All of these feel like beautiful, collaborative acts of dramaturgy, and I am grateful to each playwright for allowing me to work closely with their plays and their own practice.

I'd love to uplift these playwrights and their plays below!

MURDER MYSTERY AT THE DMA

Who done it??

While Natalia was definitely more of a crier than a killer, the patrons of the Dallas Museum of Art solved the mystery and got to experience art as they did so. This is the most unique event I've been part of to-date, and I think the world needs more museum murder mystery parties! I'm grateful to Ally Beans, CSA for the chance to bring this Czech portrait to life.

This October, I along with a team of lovely actors got to quite literally bring art to life in a Murder Mystery event for the Dallas Museum of Art! I brought the “Portrait of Natalia Zakharovna Kolycheva, née Hitrovo,” painted by Élisabeth Louise Vigée-Lebrun to life as the backup singer of Maestro and the Muses, an inter-museum band who suddenly found their lead singer dead.

YOU AND ME AND OOB

I interned with Concord Theatricals first as the Acquisitions and Artistic Development Intern back in Spring of 2022 remotely from Texas while finishing my undergraduate degree. In that endeavor, I got to read many plays, scout a few shows, and see the inner workings of acquiring new works and championing their writers. I also read submissions for the Samuel French Off Off Broadway Short Play Festival, endearingly known as OOB.

This summer, while interning for Brand Marketing, I was asked to take a week and serve as a Festival Production Coordinator for the 2023 OOB Festival. This felt like a full-circle moment, having seen plays at the submissions level the year before. We worked the week at New York's Vineyard Theatre Off Broadway to rehearse and stage the top 30 short play finalists for audiences. From those, a top 6 was chosen to be published by Concord/Samuel French.

Fun Fact: The Vineyard Theatre is well-known for its role in the process of [title of show] coming to Broadway. This was one of my final shows in college and was a fun coincidence to see "the momentum at the Vineyard Theatre Off-Broadway."

MY SUMMER WITH RODGERS & HAMMERSTEIN

I spent much of my time in their archival closet, organizing everything from original sheet music to demo tapes to merchandise. It's sweet to see just how many generations can be affected by the same stories. My own grandparents went on their first date to see
The Sound of Music  in movie theaters, and so this closeness to the same story as their origins felt special to me.

I also learned lots of marketing, from influencer partnerships to social listening skills to how marketing planning timelines work. I'm a whiz at Excel sheets and finding niche Tik Toks! Most of all, I am grateful to my wonderful mentors in my time here on the Brand team.
This summer, I worked as the Brand Marketing Intern at Concord Theatricals in NYC, meaning I spent loads of time with Rodgers & Hammerstein and Marvin Hamlisch! This marked my first time living in New York, and I deeply understand the love for the culture-filled, theatre-loving, walkable city.

On my very first day, we celebrated 80 years of Rodgers & Hammerstein with a pre-screening of the Royal National Theatre's production of their first musical together, Oklahoma! This version stars Hugh Jackman and marked my first time ever seeing this particular musical.

THE WORLD WAS YOURS @ THE TANK

This June, I took planes, trains, and automobiles to get to NYC for a reading of William Ivers' The World Was Yours after a storm cancelled my original travel accommodations. It was wild, and so is this play! I love how its characters explore how artists talk to each other across generations, which is a feat I think we all need more practice in on a broader level. I played Joy, a muralist who wants to yell her opinions as loud as she can, partly because she doesn't feel like she can be heard. This is different from my quiet, contemplative approach but reminded me of my younger peers. As someone who straddles the cusp between millennial and Gen Z, I felt like I had a unique perspective on where generations miss each other, and where they say something profound. I'd love to know what you think about it!

MY FIRST LMDA CONFERENCE!

This is from the hike we went on on our very first day! How beautiful!
I'm still in awe that I got to attend my first in-person Literary Managers and Dramaturgs of the Americas conference in the beautiful Banff, Canada.

In the spirit of respect, reciprocity, and truth, I wish to honor and acknowledge that the townsite of Banff is located on traditional Treaty 7 territory. "These sacred lands are a gathering place for the Niitsitapi from the Blackfoot Confederacy, of whom the  Siksika, Kainai, and Piikani First Nations are part; the Îyârhe Nakoda of the Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Goodstoney First Nations; the Tsuut’ina First Nation; the Métis Nation of Alberta, Region III within the historical Northwest Métis Homeland, and many others whose histories, languages, and cultures continue to enrich their vibrant community."
-Banff's Land Acknowledgement
Since there is often only one dramaturg in a rehearsal room or on a project, it is rare to have this many dramaturgs in the same room! I still feel joyful about the conversations I was able to be part of and the wisdom I was able to soak in during my time at Banff. I can't wait for next year's conference in Kansas City!

AMPHIBIAN STAGE, SPARKFEST 2023

I spent the spring and early summer with Amphibian Stage in Fort Worth, TX. (I adore them. Be sure to always check out their programming if you're local because you're in for a thoughtful and fun time always. Sometimes fun means crying your eyes out, sometimes it means laughing your guts out.) This year's 2-week arts festival centers around Middle Eastern, North African, and South Asian (MENASA) artists in an effort to better acquaint the theatre industry at large with MENASA artists. This festival, like the whole season, is a beautiful celebration of artists across disciplines and how profoundly new work can affect the future of performing arts.

I transported artists, read plays, selected sides for the first-ever SparkFest Acting Competition, saw great theatre and theatre-in-progress (hot topic: isn't theatre constantly in-progress? more on that later), and mostly met the amazing people involved. I will be forever grateful for this time and am a forever fan of these actors, artistic staff,  musicians, playwrights, and singers.

I'd love to continue to uplift these artists.

Baba at Amphibian Stage

Spring to Summer of 2023 is best spent with Amphibian Stage! As part of my internship with them for their summer arts festival SparkFest, I was able to introduce a little dramaturgy to their season for their production of Baba by Denmo Ibrahim in the form of an audience guide to help connect the Fort Worth community to this beauty of a play. This dramaturgy consisted of uplifting voices and the MENASA culture in this play in order to foster deeper connections from the audiences to its beauty and its hardship. I was grateful to have contributions from scholars and from those I call friend.

Baba by Denmo Ibrahim at Amphibian Stage | Directed by Hamid Dehghani

For fans of Everything Everywhere All At Once, The Farewell, Aftersun, and Undone, Baba is where family meets fantasy. Trapped in the absurd circus of the office of US Passport & Immigration, a desperate father pleads his case—a passport for his little girl—revealing the price he paid for the American Dream in the process. Thirty years later, his daughter Layla embarks on a journey halfway across the world in hopes of reclaiming the lost pieces of her culture, her father, and herself.

In addition to working as a Co-Editor for the Literary Managers and Dramaturgs of the Americas' monthly Bulletin newsletter, I had the chance to add my creative and critical writing skills to the mix in "Drawn to Nature: On Dramaturgical Landscapes" as the Featured Article in the March 2023 edition of the Bulletin. It weaves together musings about Beatrix Potter, having a curatorial consciousness, and dramaturgs as shepherds. You can see it on my Writing page, linked below!
