ALL OF THE THINGS VERSION:
Ally Varitek (she/her) is a dramaturg, literary manager, editorial marketing professional, script reader, arts administrator, wordsmith, movement enthusiast, and hobby archivist originally from the state of Georgia, now based in NYC. With a background in choir, sports, and theatre performance, she knits all sides of her performance past, movement methods, introverted disposition, and current literary affinity most often in the development of new works. Ally earned a BFA in Theatre Performance with Concentration in Musical Theatre from Baylor University and is a grateful graduate of the Baylor Interdisciplinary Core honors program (which, actually, was a dramaturgical wonderland. Ask her about it!).

Her dramaturgy thus far has included script consultations, festival producing and literary management, production dramaturgy, educational resources, lobby displays, script reading, and new work development dramaturgy for plays, musicals, and plays with music.

Ally is passionate about stories with space for melancholy and the bittersweet, movement in theatre, environmental science, plays with music, folk musicals, literary adaptations, femme-centric stories, and ensemble work. While she has some specialities, Ally has a wide and varied interest in all creative works and promises to approach your writing with an open heart and curious mind.

In addition to dramaturgical pursuits, Ally lends her detail-oriented skillset behind the scenes to arts administration. In her time with Amphibian Stage’s SparkFest, she’s served stories by coordinating casting, managing script submissions, handling communications with creatives, organizing schedules, securing travel and transportation, selecting sides for a nationwide acting competition, setting up many many chairs, running light boards, reviewing and writing website copy edits, and more. She’s not afraid of the multiplicity sometimes needed to get stories onstage.

On occasion, Ally utilizes an introverted perspective to connect theatre to the wider world through writing. Select bylines include Breaking Character: A Concord Theatricals Publication, connecting Beatrix Potter to dramaturgy in an article for the LMDA Bulletin, travel blogs for Millennium Tours, theatre education content for Theater.Academy, and more coming soon!

In a few of her theatrical freelancing endeavors, Ally dabbles in archiving. She took a summer to chronicle Baylor Theatre’s season histories for internal use, spent another summer organizing an archival closet of physical materials for a theatrical licensing company, and spent multiple years learning more about archival methods & organizing a digital archive via Starchive for a theatrical writing team’s estate. She has made a bit of an archive for herself here at allyvaritek.com. Feel free to explore it for yourself!

When not reading a play or in a rehearsal space, you can find Ally searching for hidden gems while antique shopping, reading with a large cup of tea, quietly competitive at a board game night, on long walks with the world's most communicative Boston Terrier, supporting women's sports (because Everyone Watches Women's Sports) or enjoying butterscotch chocolate chip cookies.

Other interests:
Archives & theatre history; women’s sports including soccer, flag football, hockey, volleyball, & tennis; folk musical styles, especially from Irish and Scottish traditions; science & environmental science/sustainability; stories where melancholy is invited to the table of acceptable emotions; introverts as characters and introversion as a lens to see the world (#theatreneedsmoreintroverts); comes from a background in movement-based work and musical theatre as a performer; grew up in the American South (from Georgia, spent time in Texas).

"Ally was fantastic to work with and was such a champion of my work. I always felt like she had my best interest in mind and asked me the best questions to help get my play and my writing to a better place. I feel like I walked away from this experience with a fuller, more realized play and a better writer."
- Parker Davis Gray, playwright, How to Lose a Sleep Paralysis Demon in 10 Days
"Ally is dedicated, thorough, intelligent, and has a innate sense about what a play is, needs, and wants to be. I highly recommend her services as a dramaturg if you're looking to cross the bridge from good to great." - Calder Meis, actor & playwright, cry hard

You may be asking... What is a dramaturg?

To me, a dramaturg is a professional sounding board, fact finder, interdisciplinary aficionado, and active listener used most in the theatre. I use dramaturgical expertise - a knowledge of storytelling techniques and research practices - and my best human skills - joy, curiosity, critical thinking, tenderness, unconditional love and empathy - to creatively problem-solve or evolve different projects. As your professional creative best friend, I can serve as an early audience member, script reader, editor, researcher, performer, and synthesis writer.
